Visual Arts
The visual arts allow students to function as artists as well as learners of the arts. GEMS World Academy – Dubai encourages all students to be artists and develop artistic curiosity about themselves, others and the world. Learning through curiosity supports students to be more effective learners, inquirers and creative problem-solvers. Students create and present arts in ways that engage and convey feelings, experiences and ideas. Through this practice, students acquire new skills and master those developed in prior learning.
The visual arts at GEMS World Academy – Dubai are studied alongside the other arts subjects from as early as Pre-KG right up to Grade 9 after which students are given the opportunity to specialise in visual arts in more depth. This specialisation allows students to build their skills and knowledge in the visual arts area to prepare them for the Diploma Programme.
Visual Art classes are designed to develop techniques and aesthetic values in both 2D and 3D mediums. Two dimensional projects include drawing, painting, graphic design and print making. Three dimensional studies include projects in ceramics, plaster, wood, metals and other recycled materials. Students are encouraged to participate in the choice of media and format according to their individual interpretation of assignments. Assignments are based on an overview of art movements, art styles as well as the art of different cultures. Students are also encouraged to celebrate artworks from their own cultures. Art appreciation and developing a critical voice are an integral part of the course. Students keep a workbook for related research assignments, preparation, development of ideas and experimentation.
The visual arts enable our students to gain a greater understanding of the world around them, enhance learning across all their subjects and support their individuality as growing members of both the local and global community. Students develop their ability to think creatively and express themselves through a variety of art forms, mediums and techniques.
Art exhibitions throughout the academic year allows students to showcase their skills and build confidence while sharing their creative talents among our academic community.
The aims of the arts are to encourage and enable students to:
- Create and present art
- Develop skills specific to the discipline
- Engage in a process of creative exploration and (self-)discovery
- Make purposeful connections between investigation and practice
- Understand the relationship between art and its contexts
- Respond to and reflect on art
- Deepen their understanding of the world
